Sony Music launches $100m fund for social justice, anti-racism causes
Sony Music, an American global music conglomerate, has launched a $100 million fund to support social justice and anti-racism initiatives around the world.
The company, while breaking the news in a statement on Friday, said it would begin to dole out funds to organizations that foster equal rights.
“Racial injustice is a global issue that affects our artists, songwriters, our people, and of course society at large,” it wrote.
“We stand against discrimination everywhere and we will take action accordingly with our community fully involved in effectively using these funds.
“Sony Music today announces the launch of a $100 million fund to support social justice and anti-racist initiatives around the world.
“The company, inclusive of its recorded music, content divisions, and music publishing company, will immediately begin to donate to organizations that foster equal rights.”
George Floyd, a black American, had died on May 25, after being pinned down by the neck for nearly nine minutes by Derek Chauvin, a Minnesota police officer, in a bid to effect his arrest.
Amid the heated protests that ensued, about 25 cities across the country had been under curfew after citizens took to the streets while celebrities spoke against racism and white privilege in the US.
Sony’s gesture came after Michael Jordan, a NBA legend, had announced that he would be giving $100 million to brands dedicated to promoting racial equality and social justice.
It also comes after Kanye West had set up a college fund for the daughter of George Floyd, while also donating $2 million to charities associated with Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.

Hanatu Gwada, judge of Kaduna state high court, on Friday, discharged and acquitted 100 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). In a statement on Friday, Ibrahim Musa, IMN spokesman, said the freed members of the group were being prosecuted by the state government in connection with the December 2015 clashes between the group and the Nigerian Army in Zaria. COVID-19: We spend over N15m weekly on health workers, says Bauchi gov

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, says the state government spends over N15 million weekly on allowances of health workers and others involved in the fight against COVID-19. Mohammed, who spoke while inaugurating the state’s molecular reference laboratory for COVID-19, said the amount is being spent on allowances for contact tracing, risk management, case management among others. Court dismisses Melaye’s suit against infectious diseases bill

A federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi west, seeking to stop the infectious diseases control bill. Melaye had filed the suit against Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, and four others seeking the protection of his fundamental rights over the bill. According to Melaye, the bill threatens “the dignity of person, personal liberty, right to private and family life, right to freedom of movement and right to own immovable property in Nigeria”. The bill also gives the director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the minister of health powers to declare “any premises” as an isolation centre and empowers the police and health officers to do whatever that is ”necessary” to enforce some provisions. Uzodinma meets Buhari, seeks refund of N32bn ‘spent on FG roads in Imo’

Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo state, on Thursday met with President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking his intervention in the refund of over N32 billion his predecessors reportedly spent on federal roads in the state. Speaking with state house correspondents after the meeting with Buhari, Uzodinma said Imo is in “financial distress”. He said the funds, if released, will assist in clearing both salary and pension arrears. He said the consultants he engaged discovered that at least N32 billion was spent on federal roads in the past. Uzodinma said he briefed Buhari on the situation of things he met on the ground in the state, adding that the president listened to him.
