Diego Costa, former Chelsea striker, has been sentenced to six months in jail for tax offences but will pay a €543,208 fine to avoid prison time.
According to El Mundo, a Spanish online outlet, the 31-year-old Atlético forward, who appeared in a Madrid court on Thursday, pleaded guilty to defrauding the state of more than €1m by not declaring payments of over €5.15m from his 2014 move to Chelsea from his current club.
Costa played for Chelsea between 2014 to 2017 before joining the Diego Simeone side. He was also said to have concealed image rights payments of about €1m.
But in compliance with the Spanish law, he has agreed to pay a fine of €507,208 as punishment for defrauding the state as well as an additional €36,500 to avoid jail time.
“Diego Costa reached an agreement a few months ago with the prosecutor and has already paid the corresponding fine plus interest and the request for a prison sentence was withdrawn,” a spokesperson for Atletico had told Reuters before his court visit.
“This week it is expected that agreement will be ratified in court, as is mandatory.”
Costa is not the first high profile footballer to have been charged with tax fraud in Spain.
Lionel Messi, Barcelona forward, was given a 21-month prison sentence for tax fraud which was later exchanged for a heavy fine.

COVID-19: We spend over N15m weekly on health workers, says Bauchi gov

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, says the state government spends over N15 million weekly on allowances of health workers and others involved in the fight against COVID-19. Mohammed, who spoke while inaugurating the state’s molecular reference laboratory for COVID-19, said the amount is being spent on allowances for contact tracing, risk management, case management among others. Court dismisses Melaye’s suit against infectious diseases bill

A federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi west, seeking to stop the infectious diseases control bill. Melaye had filed the suit against Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, and four others seeking the protection of his fundamental rights over the bill. According to Melaye, the bill threatens “the dignity of person, personal liberty, right to private and family life, right to freedom of movement and right to own immovable property in Nigeria”. The bill also gives the director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the minister of health powers to declare “any premises” as an isolation centre and empowers the police and health officers to do whatever that is ”necessary” to enforce some provisions. Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo state, on Thursday met with President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking his intervention in the refund of over N32 billion his predecessors reportedly spent on federal roads in the state. Speaking with state house correspondents after the meeting with Buhari, Uzodinma said Imo is in “financial distress”. He said the funds, if released, will assist in clearing both salary and pension arrears. He said the consultants he engaged discovered that at least N32 billion was spent on federal roads in the past.
