Supreme court adjourns hearing of Yari’s application till March 17

The supreme court has adjourned the hearing of an application filed by a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Abdullaziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara, till March 17.
Yari is asking the apex court to review its judgement nullifying the victory of his faction of the APC in Zamfara in the 2019 elections.
While Yari was declared winner of the Zamfara west seat at the senate, Mukhtar Idris, a former finance commissioner, was declared winner of the governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
But another faction of the APC led by Kabir Marafa, a former senator, challenged the victory of Yari’s faction in court.
Marafa’s faction argued that the APC in Zamfara did not hold primary elections so the candidates fielded in the general election were illegal.
The apex court agreed with the argument and voided the votes the APC secured at the polls.
This development paved the way for Bello Matawalle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be sworn in as governor of the state.
At the court on Monday, the seven-man panel of justices led by Ibrahim Muhammad, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), pointed out to Robert Clarke, counsel to the Yari faction, that the 141st to the 178th respondents do not have representation in court and have not been served.
Responding, Clarke said: “I will quickly rectify this my lord. I am in a dilemma. I will not mind an earlier date than Tuesday.”
On his part, Mike Ozekhome, counsel to Marafa’s faction, said they attempted to serve processes on the lawyers of the 141st to the 178th respondents but they did not accept it.


The CJN then adjourned the matter till March 17.

Hanatu Gwada, judge of Kaduna state high court, on Friday, discharged and acquitted 100 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). COVID-19: We spend over N15m weekly on health workers, says Bauchi gov

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, says the state government spends over N15 million weekly on allowances of health workers and others involved in the fight against COVID-19. Mohammed, who spoke while inaugurating the state’s molecular reference laboratory for COVID-19, said the amount is being spent on allowances for contact tracing, risk management, case management among others. Court dismisses Melaye’s suit against infectious diseases bill

A federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi west, seeking to stop the infectious diseases control bill. Melaye had filed the suit against Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, and four others seeking the protection of his fundamental rights over the bill. According to Melaye, the bill threatens “the dignity of person, personal liberty, right to private and family life, right to freedom of movement and right to own immovable property in Nigeria”. The bill also gives the director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the minister of health powers to declare “any premises” as an isolation centre and empowers the police and health officers to do whatever that is ”necessary” to enforce some provisions. Uzodinma meets Buhari, seeks refund of N32bn ‘spent on FG roads in Imo’

Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo state, on Thursday met with President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking his intervention in the refund of over N32 billion his predecessors reportedly spent on federal roads in the state. Speaking with state house correspondents after the meeting with Buhari, Uzodinma said Imo is in “financial distress”. He said the funds, if released, will assist in clearing both salary and pension arrears. He said the consultants he engaged discovered that at least N32 billion was spent on federal roads in the past. Uzodinma said he briefed Buhari on the situation of things he met on the ground in the state, adding that the president listened to him.
