Kaduna DisCo threatens to disconnect customers who reject prepaid meters

The Kaduna Electricity distribution company says it will disconnect the electricity supply of customers who reject the installation of prepaid meters in their premises.
In a statement signed by Abdulazeez Abdullahi, its head of corporate communication, the DisCo said the cap on estimated billing by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is to accelerate metering of residential and commercial customers.
The regulator had issued a directive reducing estimated billing for unmetered customers on single and three-phase (R2 and C1) tariff class in the 11 DisCos depending on the area until a prepaid meter is installed.
“Yes! The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has put a cap on billing by estimation. But guess what? NERC also said all customers must allow their premises to be metered or else they will be disconnected,” the company said.
“Therefore any customer who refuses to be metered will be disconnected from electricity supply. Kaduna Electric’s Meter Asset Providers have meters available.
“The order of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission putting a cap on estimated billing did not imply that all residential and commercial customers shall pay a uniform rate; rather, the order stipulated different rates for different locations.
“So, the capping was essentially to accelerate the metering of customers in the residential and commercial categories. The capping as directed by NERC varies from one location to another within the company’s four franchise states of Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi.”
At present, prepaid meters are provided to consumers through meter assets providers, who are third-party investors in the sector.

COVID-19: We spend over N15m weekly on health workers, says Bauchi gov

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, says the state government spends over N15 million weekly on allowances of health workers and others involved in the fight against COVID-19. Mohammed, who spoke while inaugurating the state’s molecular reference laboratory for COVID-19, said the amount is being spent on allowances for contact tracing, risk management, case management among others. Court dismisses Melaye’s suit against infectious diseases bill

A federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi west, seeking to stop the infectious diseases control bill. Melaye had filed the suit against Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, and four others seeking the protection of his fundamental rights over the bill. According to Melaye, the bill threatens “the dignity of person, personal liberty, right to private and family life, right to freedom of movement and right to own immovable property in Nigeria”. The bill also gives the director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the minister of health powers to declare “any premises” as an isolation centre and empowers the police and health officers to do whatever that is ”necessary” to enforce some provisions. Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo state, on Thursday met with President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking his intervention in the refund of over N32 billion his predecessors reportedly spent on federal roads in the state. Speaking with state house correspondents after the meeting with Buhari, Uzodinma said Imo is in “financial distress”. He said the funds, if released, will assist in clearing both salary and pension arrears. He said the consultants he engaged discovered that at least N32 billion was spent on federal roads in the past.
