Google, Flutterwave to train 5,000 SMEs in Nigeria
Google Nigeria says it will organise business clinics to help 5,000 small and medium enterprises acquire the skills needed to leverage the web for growth.
The training, it said, will be organised in collaboration with Flutterwave, a digital payments company.
Called the ‘Digital Business Compass’, the first clinic sessions will be run from March 3-5 in Lagos.
According to a statement released by the company, sessions will include case studies and live sessions to give attending businesses hands-on experience of how Google and Flutterwave’s products can be leveraged and will be followed by consultations with digital business managers and support teams who will give attendees personalised advice on how to grow their businesses.
“According to the ministry of industry, trade and investment, Nigeria has over 37.07 million micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs), which account for more than 84% of jobs in the country,” says Tolulope Akinyele, Google Partners Lead, West Africa.
“Many of them lack the skills and tools to take advantage of the Web to grow their businesses, however. Working with Flutterwave, our goal for holding these clinics is to provide a platform for SMEs to learn skills and master tools that will help them better utilise the Web to grow their businesses.”
In his remarks, Olugbenga Agboola, CEO and co-founder of Flutterwave, said: “Helping these businesses grow is a net positive for all parties including Google. Beyond contributing to the growth of the country’s digital economy, when these businesses better learn about online tools, they join a community of businesses and users that are leveraging Google’s tools to further drive their growth.”


Agboola said the sessions will help small businesses scale and drive up revenue.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and paraded a top social media Influencer, Adedamola Adewale who goes by the username @adeherself on Instagram and Twitter. Adedamola was paraded alongside four other suspects arrested by EFCC for their alleged involvements in various internet frauds.While Adewale, 20, and his accomplice, Lamina Hamzat Ajibola, were arrested at the Agungi area of Lekki, Lagos State, the trio of Israel Onyebuchi, Emmanuel Olayode and Valentine Nwokorie were picked up at the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State. Members of the federal capital territory (FCT) COVID-19 emergency response team say they did not abandon their duty posts despite the non-payment of their N30,000 daily allowance for April and May. TheCable had reported how the health workers converged on the public health department office, Area 3, Garki, Abuja, on Tuesday  demanding payment of their outstanding allowance  before they would return to work. Among those being owed are sample collectors, case investigators, ambulance drivers, environmental health worker, temperature readers and cleaners. Two policemen shot dead at Ondo checkpoint

At least two policemen were killed after gunmen struck at a checkpoint in Irele local government area of Ondo state. According to Femi Joseph, spokesman of t he Ondo police command, the two officers were killed  at the checkpoint along Ajagba road, on Monday. He said investigations have commenced to unravel the cause of the attack. Joseph added that the officer who sustained injuries in the attack is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. FG extends registration deadline for marginal field bid round to June 21

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has extended the registration deadline for the marginal oil fields bids by one week. In a notice published on Thursday, the agency said the deadline has been moved from June 14 to June 21. It did not give a reason for the extension. If successful, it would be the first marginal field bidding round to hold since 2002. DPR announced the commencement of the bidding rounds on June 1; offering 57 fields located onshore, swamp, and shallow offshore terrains. Marginal fields are smaller oil blocks, with reported reserves and production potential, which have been discovered by companies and have not been developed for over a period of 10 years. Man jumps into lagoon from third mainland bridge

A man, on Saturday, plunged into the lagoon from the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos state. The man, who was identified the man as Daibo Toju Davies of 17, Sosanya street, Soluyi, Gbagada, Lagos, was said to have told the driver of the Uber car he activated from a hospital in Gbagada to stop after which he jumped into the water. Four NSCDC officers abducted in Kogi

At least four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been kidnapped. William Aya, a deputy superintendent of police, told NAN that the officers were kidnapped at a spot in Alo-Offoke community on the Itobe-Ayingba road. The officials were said to be travelling to Makurdi for promotion examination when their vehicles were stopped by some gunmen. “Information gathered reveals that four civil defence personnel were among the kidnapped victims,” Aya said, indicating that those kidnapped may be more than four.
