Buhari orders probe of security operatives ‘who released’ 295 smuggled oil tankers illegally


President Muhammadu Buhari says he is disheartened by the unauthorised release of 295 tankers of smuggled petroleum products by security officials at the land borders.
Nigeria’s land borders have been closed since August 2019 to checkmate smuggling of arms and food items.
After the closure, the federal government directed that petroleum products should not be supplied to fuel stations within 20 kilometers of the borders.
But in a statement on Saturday, Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, said while the operation has been relatively successful, some security officials have been sabotaging the government’s efforts.
He explained that some of the officials meant to protect the borders released, without due authorisation, 295 tankers laden with smuggled petroleum products.
“The border drill has been hugely successful and has led to the interception and seizure of large quantities of foods, materials, minerals and petroleum resources illegally trafficked across our borders. The President commends the security agencies for a job well done,” the statement read.
“He, however, finds it disheartening to learn that 295 smuggled petroleum tankers were released without due authorization on 17th December, 2019 by some security officials charged with the responsibility of protecting our borders.
“Sequel to this act, the National Security Adviser (NSA) was directed to set up a Board of Inquiry to investigate the crime, and it was recommended to the President that all officials (civilian or security operatives) found to have connived to undermine government’s efforts should be withdrawn from the border drill and severely sanctioned by their respective organizations.
“The President has accepted the recommendations and directed the immediate withdrawal and replacement of all those found culpable. He has also directed that their respective organizations should mete immediate appropriate disciplinary actions to them.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and paraded a top social media Influencer, Adedamola Adewale who goes by the username @adeherself on Instagram and Twitter. Members of the federal capital territory (FCT) COVID-19 emergency response team say they did not abandon their duty posts despite the non-payment of their N30,000 daily allowance for April and May. Two policemen shot dead at Ondo checkpoint

At least two policemen were killed after gunmen struck at a checkpoint in Irele local government area of Ondo state. According to Femi Joseph, spokesman of t he Ondo police command, the two officers were killed  at the checkpoint along Ajagba road, on Monday. He said investigations have commenced to unravel the cause of the attack. Joseph added that the officer who sustained injuries in the attack is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. FG extends registration deadline for marginal field bid round to June 21

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has extended the registration deadline for the marginal oil fields bids by one week. In a notice published on Thursday, the agency said the deadline has been moved from June 14 to June 21. It did not give a reason for the extension. If successful, it would be the first marginal field bidding round to hold since 2002. DPR announced the commencement of the bidding rounds on June 1; offering 57 fields located onshore, swamp, and shallow offshore terrains. Marginal fields are smaller oil blocks, with reported reserves and production potential, which have been discovered by companies and have not been developed for over a period of 10 years. Man jumps into lagoon from third mainland bridge

A man, on Saturday, plunged into the lagoon from the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos state. The man, who was identified the man as Daibo Toju Davies of 17, Sosanya street, Soluyi, Gbagada, Lagos, was said to have told the driver of the Uber car he activated from a hospital in Gbagada to stop after which he jumped into the water. Four NSCDC officers abducted in Kogi

At least four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been kidnapped. William Aya, a deputy superintendent of police, told NAN that the officers were kidnapped at a spot in Alo-Offoke community on the Itobe-Ayingba road.
